Released to critical acclaim in 2021 by Koehler Books, LADY BE GOOD has been hailed as “radical historical fiction that vibrates with romance, drama, life in high society and tragedy. With precision and painstaking research, Hamilton reveals the story of a woman determined to make a name for herself in a world ruled by men and ruled by money, power and relationships. The sleek timeline and high fashion of the era, filled with jazz music and roaring parties that would be the envy of the Gatsby crowd. » » (BookLife by Publishers Weekly)

Celebrated as “a masterpiece of fact and fiction that feels both historical and modern” (Manhattan Book Review), LADY BE GOOD “offers a heady mix of glitz, glamour, love and betrayal, with a heartbreaking ending that lingers long after the last page.(IndieReader)

LADY BE GOOD is a moving portrait of Dorothy Hale, the legendary 1930s socialite and actress immortalized in one of Frida Kahlo’s most famous and controversial paintings, and the acclaimed playwright and editor of Vogue and Vanity Fair Clare Boothe Luce. The two friends defy tradition to pursue their dreams as they please and find themselves at the center of a political intrigue. Literary Hub selected LADY BE GOOD as one of five novels with unusually touching female characters.

Author Pamela Hamilton stumbled across Hale and Luce’s story when she stayed at the posh Hampshire House building in New York City, the building where Hale lived and died. After many years of research, she discovered that Hale’s life had not been portrayed in its true light.

Hamilton says, “We now have more opportunities to dig deeper into the women’s stories and celebrate their true legacies. The story of Dorothy Hale and Clare Boothe Luce is one of courage – I found their struggles, victories and transformations remarkable. They fought to succeed and find their voice in a society that silenced women. They celebrated each other’s successes and cushioned each other’s falls. Vibrant, resilient, and beautiful in all their complexity, they define the modern woman of the 1920s and 2020s. I hope readers feel deeply connected to them. I’m excited to examine a character’s life and see the world through their lens.
