Carthage Service League donations continue | News

Carthage Service League members voted to donate to the Footprints in the Sand monument at the January meeting held at the Sammy Brown Library.

This donation is one of many that the League has been able to give in recent months. Revenue from the Service League Thrift Shop makes these contributions possible.

“Our success is only possible because of the donations from our community, the service of our volunteers and the loyalty of our customers,” said store co-manager Betty Kasper.

President Debbie Jernigan welcomed new member Kerry Smith and chaired the business meeting.

Kasper said extra cleaning precautions have been put in place at the downtown store to combat the spread of the COVID virus.

During the month of January, special sales will be announced weekly in various areas of the store. Additionally, prom and special occasion dresses will be available during regular store hours for high school students with proper ID. The girls must be present to choose a dress.

Sammy Brown Library Board Chair Nancy Langford presented the library’s report. In 2021, 78,565 items were distributed while 39,245 people visited the library. Sheri Espinoza has been promoted to full-time children’s coordinator and Ashleigh Earle is a new part-time employee.

The Lunch Book Club was planning to discuss Sean Dietrich’s The Incredible Winston Brown on Thursday, January 20 at noon in the Library’s Welcome Room. Director Kim Turner is scheduled to moderate the discussion.

Recent monetary donations from individuals and corporations have enabled the addition of VOX books and Launchpads in the children’s area and large print books for adults.

President Jernigan has appointed a scholarship committee to begin work on selecting 2022 scholarship recipients at Panola College. All Panola County high school students are eligible to apply. Additionally, Lana Overton has been named the new Media Chair.

Kayla McKnight was recognized for her January birthday and the hostesses for the snow-themed reunion were Donna Arnold, Fran Giroux, Harriet Huff, Mary Jo George, Nancy Langford and Gayla LaGrone.

Among those present at the rally were Barbara Alexander, Arnold, Brenda Beasley, Deanie Berry, Bobbie Cariker, Sarah Davidson, Dorothy Foley, Cherie Gibert, Giroux, Darline Graves, Sandy Griffin, Jo Hall, JoAn Henry, Richie Honeycutt, Margie Hopkins, Linda Howard, Huff, Janet Humber, Jernigan, Kasper, LaGrone, Langford, McKnight, Jo McMillin, Overton, Patty Rushing, Linda Salgado, Smith and Kay Williamson.
