‘A new story by internationally acclaimed author Amitav Ghosh, The Living Mountain is a cautionary tale of how we have systematically exploited nature, leading to environmental collapse.
Told like a dream, it is a fable about Mahaparbat, the Living Mountain; the native inhabitants of the valley who live and prosper in its shelter; the assault on the mountain for commercial purposes by the Anthropoi, humans whose sole purpose is to reap the benefits of nature; and the resulting disaster.
The Living Mountain is particularly relevant today, as we fight a pandemic and face a climate catastrophe: both are the product of our insufficient understanding of humanity’s relationship with nature, and of our appropriation and our continued abuse of natural resources. It is a book of our time, for our time, and it will resonate strongly with readers of all ages.
Amitav Ghosh said, “Some time ago I was asked to contribute to a volume of essays on climate change and the Anthropocene, by many of the world’s authorities on these subjects. All I could find is a short story, and to my surprise the pundits were very happy, perhaps because this is an aspect of our ongoing planetary crisis that is rarely discussed. I am delighted that HarperCollins India is publishing this story , The Living Mountain, as a standalone book, e-book, and audiobook. I am also delighted that it is simultaneously released in a Hindi translation.“
Oudayan Mitraexecutive editor, says, “At Amitav Ghosh new book The Living Mountain (Mahaparbat in the Hindi edition) is a modern fable, a cautionary tale, an unforgettable tale of how humans try to use natural resources without understanding nature at all. In a few thousand words, Amitav has beautifully captured the deadly combination of ignorance, aspiration, greed and display of false power that has led to much of the environmental crisis we see around us; The wonderful illustrations of Devangana Dash allow for a very interesting interaction between words and images. The Living Mountain (Mahaparbat) is a story of our time, for our time. We are delighted to release this very special book under our prestigious Fourth Estate brand, and in multiple editions: English, Hindi, eBook and Audiobook. I can not wait The Living Mountain (Mahaparbat) to reach the hands of readers!“
