Home Brew hits Preakness ticket in Oaklawn Stakes

After falling back to fourth early, home brew had something in the works to win the $150,000 Oaklawn Stakes in 1:50.63 on April 23 at Oaklawn Park.

The winning recipe also included a secret ingredient.

Jockey Jose Ortiz, speaking on Oaklawn’s internal show, recounted the nugget of wisdom he received from Jorge Abrego, assistant to trainer Brad Cox, ahead of the 1 1/8 test mile: “‘No leading horse has won (Saturday at Oaklawn) other than Letruska , and she is a great mare. Don’t send it in the lead.'”

He did not do it. Under the manipulation of the patients, the son of street sense stalked the leaders and stayed within striking distance for the first half mile, two lengths behind Kuchar , who led through splits of :23.74, :48.10 and 1:12.04 until Home Brew made their move and took over at a 1:37.69 mile. Home Brew fired even with Kuchar and pressed the beat happy boy rocket at turn two before pulling away for a 1 3/4 length win over the early leader.

Happy Boy Rocket finished third.
