On the occasion of the bicentenary of the birth of Louis Vuitton, the French fashion house and Éditions Gallimard have published an unpublished novel on the life of the creator entitled Louis, The Audacious“the daring”. From his humble beginnings leaving his home on foot at just 14 years old, readers will follow Vuitton’s historic adventure in Paris to work for the prestigious trunk maker Maréchal at Faubourg Saint-Honoré and his ultimate foundation of the Louis Vuitton brand.

Written by award-winning novelist Caroline Bongrand, his lively and entertaining voice unveils the career of the creator (whose surname translates to “stubborn” in the local Jura dialect) as he discovers his craft and his vision. In the middle of the 19th century, the young Louis Vuitton arrived in a city soon transformed by the elegant architecture of Baron Haussmann and sumptuously colored by the Second Empire. Louis, The Audacious illustrates his early experiences in the Maréchal’s workshop, where he made and packed tailor-made luggage for wealthy Parisians, as well as his friendship with the Empress of France, Eugénie de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III. Its history leads to the opening in 1854 of the innovative brand Louis Vuitton and its work of designing trunks for royalty, when its trunks were tasked with protecting the world’s most opulent fashions.
