Multigender author Cheryl Denise Bannerman launches her first-ever children’s rhyme book

January 31st, 2022, award-winning multi-genre author Cheryl Denise Bannerman surprised her readers with The Gecko Without An Echo. This beautifully illustrated children’s book of pastel watercolors by illustrator, Anushka Bansal, opens the author up to a whole new group of readers – young children in the early stages of development.

“It’s a genre I’ve wanted to venture into for so long, but I wanted the message to be meaningful. In this first book, The Gecko Without An Echo, I teach young children the importance of meaningful friendships, appreciating those around us and communicating with them when we need someone to listen to us,” says author Ms. Bannerman.

In the new children’s book, Earl the squirrel and Tim the gecko are best friends who live in a tree by the bay. Tim is happy wandering the woods with his best friend, except for one thing… when he calls out his name, he gets no response. They roam the forest shouting up and down and even teach children “Hello” in different languages as they try to find Tim’s echo.

In a recent Goodreads review by Vanessa Garcia, she writes, “It’s beautifully illustrated, and the rhyming verses are sure to keep youngsters engaged. And to top it off, the story is about a problem that affects not just children, but adults as well. So, for anyone with kids, I highly recommend this book.

The author posted recently: “I intentionally wanted my first book to rhyme, as I had studied how rhyme helps babies and children learn words, sounds and language formation, and that rhythm and repetition help children build early literacy skills for brain development.”

The author went on to discuss his own childhood memories and a room full of bookcases lined with amazingly colorful hardcover books and his parents who read to him every night.

“My childhood is what ignited the watercolor ideas in my head and the glossy hardcover design,” the author recalls, “and I’m so lucky to have found such a talented illustrator as Anushka Bansal .”

Cheryl Denise Bannerman is the winner of the 2018 Book Excellence Award for her book of poetry, Words Never Spoken, winner of the Best Books Awards in the category of African American Fiction in 2020 for Black Child to Black Woman, and 2021 Readers’ Favorite Honorable Mention in the Fiction – Urban Genre category for Black Child to Black Woman. She is also an MLC Audiobook Awards semi-finalist with a 2020 IMDb nomination for Book 1 of the Anna Romano Mystery Series, Cats, Cannolis and a Curious Abduction.

Ms. Bannerman hopes to win many more prizes in her new genre of children’s books. She hopes parents will invest in this precious story and find out what happens to Earl the squirrel and Tim the gecko on one of their hikes in the woods and what Tim ultimately learns about communication and friendship.
