Next week, St. Martin’s Press is releasing a new novel by Star Trek: The Next Generation Brent Spiner whom he describes as a mixture of thriller with dark comedy, and “partly a memoir, but none of that is real, really, although a lot has actually happened.” There will also be an audiobook version voiced by Spiner, joined by a number of his TNG co-stars. We have some audio clips to get you started.
Brent Spiner Fan-fiction
The title of Spiner’s new novel is Fan Fiction – A Mem-Noir: inspired by real events. Here’s how the editor describes it:
Brent Spiner’s explosive and hilarious novel is a personal look at the slightly crooked relationship between a celebrity and his fans. If the Coen Brothers were to make a Star Trek movie, involving the complexity of fan obsession and sci-fi, this dark comedy just might be the right one.
Located in 1991, just like Star Trek: The Next Generation has propelled the cast to world fame, young and impressionable actor Brent Spiner receives a mysterious package and a series of disturbing letters, which take him on a terrifying and bizarre journey that engages Paramount Security, the LAPD and even the FBI to put a stop to the danger that puts his life and his career on the line.
Spiner collaborated with writer Jeanne Darst (Fiction ruined my family) for the novel, which arrives in hardcover and ebook Tuesday, October 12.
TNG Stars Join Audiobook
The book includes scenes with Spiner’s real TNG costars, and a number of them have joined him for the audiobook version. The full casting recording of Fan-fiction includes LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, Jonathan Frakes, Genie Francis, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis and Patrick Stewart.
In the following excerpt, Brent says he begins to deal with the mystery on the set of Star Trek: The Next Generation, with a little help from LeVar Burton.
This second audio clip uniquely features Spiner, speaking about a pivotal moment as a young actor in New York City.
