Oztoberfest returns to Wamego

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – People from across the rainbow have landed in the Land of Oz in Wamego.

“I have loved The Wizard of Oz since I was a little girl and it was special because we had to go to someone’s house and watch it on color TV,” said visitor BJ Carden.

“It’s dedicated to a movie, it’s dedicated to loving things that children love, that’s what makes it magical, is that everyone appreciates it at the same level, that’s magical, ”Carden said.

Melanie and BJ traveled from Wisconsin to see one of Kansas’ hidden gems and they haven’t forgotten their ruby slippers and super cool costumes!

“The lion has always been my favorite because he had to find the courage to do the things he wanted to do so I took the Wizard of Oz costume, made a top hat in the instead of a full costume because I know it would get too hot, so that’s my love for the lion, ”she said.

When they leave the sunflower state, they will have a few things that they will miss the most.

“The museum is beautifully laid out, I have been to other museums and this one is fantastic, we went to the winery and had tacos at Toto’s, we enjoy everything, the yellow brick road we saw the murals were well done.

Coming from across the rainbow, Janna’s love for the movie took her and her company “Oz-some Inspirations” from Colorado to the Yellow Brick Road.

“I love the story, I love the characters and I can connect with each of them in different ways and it’s just a delightful story and we were listening to the audiobook on the way here and it’s timeless and positive and I like that it’s for all ages, ”said Janna Gustafson.

Gustafson puts his passion for the Wizard of Oz and his creativity at the service of others.

“I find flannels in resale stores and take them home and it’s a process of laundering and cleaning the shirts, I have been collecting vintage Wizard of Oz t-shirts for a long time, then I take the shirt and I cut it and iron it over a backing to stiffen it, then sew it up and create a one-of-a-kind piece, so each one is unique, ”she said.
