SIOUX FALLS, SD (KELO) – Places for the Class AA women’s football championship were up for grabs on Tuesday night. In a semi-final, it was 3-seeded Lincoln against 10-seeded Roosevelt.
Lincoln advanced to the semi-finals with wins over Jefferson and Rapid City Central. The Patriots beat the Cavaliers 1-0 in the first round, then defeated Rapid City Central 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
Roosevelt defeated Pierre 1-0 in the first round, then knocked down second-seeded Brandon Valley 1-0 in the quarter-finals.
The first half was marked by solid play from the goalkeepers of both teams, with neither team being able to find the back of the net. In the second half, Roosevelt had the best scoring opportunities early on, but a save by Cassidy Jennings kept the game goalless.
Roosevelt would finally break through with less than 25 minutes to go as Isabel Peterson beat Jennings to give the Rough Riders the lead 1-0. Roosevelt’s defense would hold on from there as the Rough Riders clinched the 1-0 victory.
Roosevelt will face Rapid City Stevens in the Class AA State Championship on Saturday. The Raiders beat seeded Aberdeen Central, 3-1 to strike his ticket. The State Class AA Girls Soccer Championship kicks off Saturday night at 5:00 p.m. at Howard Wood Field.
